Instructors
Our instructors are first-class teachers of the game. Backed by years of experience as players and coaches at various levels of play, they enjoy sharing their baseball knowledge and enjoyment of the game with kids of all ages. Baseball is their passion.
Bruce Johnson
Bruce Johnson, Hitting and Fielding (Owner)
Two-time First-Team All Northern California High School Shortstop. After high school, Bruce started four years at UC Berkeley, where he played in the College World Series (1980), earned All Pac-10 3B honors (1981) and was voted Team MVP (1982). Following his senior year, he served as Head Coach of Cal's Junior Varsity Baseball Team. Bruce went on to become an International Player / Manager in Melbourne, Australia, and earned a position on the Australian National Team at third base. Bruce has played and coached at all amateur levels and has 22 years of experience working with youth development programs.

Alan Patrick
Alan Patrick, Hitting and Catching (Manager)
Three-time First Team All-Metro & 1994 All-State Catcher from Ballard HS. He earned a baseball scholarship to the University of Portland where he played catcher and outfield, leading his team in hitting his senior year. Alan was the associate head coach at Lynnwood High School from 2000-2002 and led the 2000 team to its first winning season and state tournament in 9 years. Alan has managed four teams the past four summers with two of his teams competing in the state championship game. His 2004 Lakeside Recovery Mickey Mantle Team won the state championship tournament. Alan has worked with hundreds of players and dozens of teams over the past 7 years as an instructor at FOC.

Hal DeBerry
Hal DeBerry, Pitching Instructor
Hal joins our staff with an extensive college coaching and professional scouting background. Hal started his college coaching career at Columbia Basin in 1986. The next year he moved on to Spokane Falls Community College where he was named pitching coach. Four years later, he was named head coach and remained in that role until 1996. In 1997, Hal ventured to Portland State University, where he served as the head pitching coach for four years. Hal then changed gears and became an area scout for the Florida Marlins for three years. Hal was named the Head Coach at Edmonds Community College in 2005.
Don Long
Don Long, Hitting Instructor
Don played pro ball for three years in the Giants organization (1983-85). Served as head coach at Seattle University from 1985-86. Began professional coaching career with first of 12 seasons in the Angels organization in 1987 at Quad City. Managed Bend (A) 1988-89. Led Quad City to Midwest League Championship in 1990, with an 81-59 record, and was named Manager of the Year. Managed four seasons at Midland (AA), earning Texas League Manager of the Year honors in 1991, when he led the club to a first place finish. Managed Vancouver (AAA), 1994-96, earning Pacific Coast League Manager of the Year honors in 1995. Managed Lake Elsinore (A) in 1997 and Midland again in 1998. Joined the Phillies organization in 1999 as Minor League Hitting Coordinator and held that job until 2007, when he was named the Pirates big league hitting coach.
Brad Files
Brad Files, Hitting and Outfield Instructor
Graduated in 1988 from Newport High School where he was a three-time letter winner as an outfielder. Spent the next two years at Mesa Community College in Arizona, and was named Team Captain of the 1990 club which won the Arizona Community College Championship, the Western Regional Title, and finished third overall at the JUCO World Series. While in college, Brad also spent summers playing for the Fairbanks Goldpanners of the Alaskan League where he was teammates with Jason Giambi. In 1994, at age 23, he was named the Head Coach at Bothell High School, where he led the Cougars to their first State Tournament appearance since 1957. He joined the Newport coaching staff as a varsity assistant in 1997, and along with then first-year head coach Brian Fischer, helped guide the Knights to their first State Championship since 1982. The tandem of Fischer/Files remains in tact, and under their tutelage Newport was again crowned State Champs in 2001. Brad has also served in a similar Assistant's role for the Food Giant / Lakeside Recovery Senior Legion team since 1996. For both squads, Newport and Lakeside Recovery, he works with hitters, outfielders, and infielders. Brad and his wife Shawna have two sons, J.T. and Erik.
Christa Bird
Christa Bird, Fastpitch Pitching & Hitting
Christa earned four varsity letters playing softball at Issaquah High School, and was the starting pitcher for three of the four years. She led Issaquah to four consecutive state softball tournament appearances, coming in second one year and eighth the other three years. Christa was also selected Second Team All-Kingco pitcher in 1999, 2000, and 2001. She also was named MVP of her high school team in year 1999. She also played ASA softball for 7 years collimating with the Washington State NSA championship title in 1999. Christa went on to play college softball with a scholarship to Bellevue Community College where she was their starting pitcher and in 2001 won the NWAACC northwest batting title with a .563 batting average.
Ryan Loesell
Ryan Loesell, Pitching Instructor
Ryan graduated from Kamiak High School in 1999 where he was a three time letter winner and received two Wesco awards. After graduation, Ryan pitched for the Bankers Baseball club, which competed in the Connie Mack World Series in 1999. Ryan earned a scholarship to the University of Portland. While attending the University of Portland, Ryan was diagnosed ineligible due to medical complications. In 2001, Ryan started coaching with the Seattle A's baseball club; the A's have been ranked as high as fifth in the nation. Ryan is also an associate scout for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays and has had two players drafted under his name. Ryan has been working on the Eastside for four years and is currently attending Northwest University in Kirkland where he lives with his wife Maria.
Kevin Chiles
Kevin Chiles, Sports Development
Kevin prepares athletes for increased sports performance. His background includes 10 years of track & field experience and 12 years of football experience (five at the D-I level). NESTA Certified, Kevin was inspired to start Chiles Sports Development after working with local athletes.
Steve Gutzler
Steve Gutzler, Motivation & Leadership
Steve Gutzler, the founder and president of LEADERSHIP QUEST, a Seattle-based leadership organization, is an authentic and engaging communicator. Having traveled and spoken extensively throughout the United States, he has had an opportunity to interact with many accomplished individuals and professional athletes. Companies such as Microsoft, Kraft Foods, and Stanwood Corporation have sought out Steve's message of character based mission and purpose. Steve has devoted himself to developing young people to build sustainable success in athletics and life's journey.

We are proud to have Steve on our team at "Field of Champions" to work with our young men and women as our Motivational and Inspirational Leader during the various Camps and Clinics throughout the year.
